Humane Society International / Wildlife Land Trust

The WLT was established in the US by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) back in 1993, and has spread to various countries around the world including Australia, India, Indonesia, Belize, Rumania and South Africa.

It is a network of sanctuaries dedicated to wildlife and habitat protection - 'saving lives, by saving land'.

The Klipkop Wildlife Sanctuary was honoured to be accepted in July 2009.

In the past the WLT have had a big presence in South Africa, working for example with the authorities in Kruger and Addo, where they helped purchase additional park lands.

WLT are still involved in the Flower Valley with the Flora and Fauna Institute (Cape Floral Kingdom), and the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary just out of Hoedspruit, through the provision of resources for a number of rehabilitation projects. Also, up the road from SanWild, WLT are supporting an elephant immuno-contraception program at The Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve.

Klipkop is very proud to be a part of this conservation network which boasts such distinguished members.

In the US, there are now 100 WLT sanctuaries (2 in Canada), around 40 of which are owned by the Trust and the rest subject to conservation easement arrangements between the Trust and the owners, for legal protection in perpetuity.

In Australia, the arrangements are mostly voluntary for the 30 odd sanctuaries in the network. The WLT runs a small grants program with other NGOs to support management activities on private refuges. Legal and land management advice is provided where possible.

Elsewhere, the WLT have specific interest - either financial or otherwise - but are not directly involved in management. Expansion plans are being actively pursued in Indonesia and India.
