Klipkop was declared a conservancy in 1995. According to the Ministry of the Environment and Tourism (MET), a conservancy is:
‘a community or group of communities within a defined geographic area who jointly manage, conserve and utilise wildlife resources’.
The hope was that, under this classification, conservancies would receive special dispensation with regard to land taxes,
and some protection from re-zoning and infrastructure development. This, however, proved not to be the case.
In 1998, the Klipkop Landowners Association was formed to create a section 21 / not for profit company which
could legally represent the interests of a demarcated area within the Conservancy. Formally identified as the Reserve,
the area is now referred to as the Klipkop Wildlife Sanctuary.
Presently, the Klipkop Wildlife Sanctuary is almost 1,500 Ha in size, and has 8 participating land owners. One of our objectives is to expand the Sanctuary
to incorporate as much of the 5,000 Ha conservancy as possible.
The formation of the Sanctuary / Reserve
Land owners lease their property, excluding compounds, to the Landowners Association.
In doing so, they themselves become members of the Association. Boundary fences are removed,
game fences are erected around the compounds, and the Wildlife Sanctuary expands!
At it's inception, the Sanctuary was a relatively small 400 Ha. |
The concept was the brain child of property owner Karl Gribnitz. It earned Klipkop the Nedbank / The Green Trust Best Emerging Conservancy 2001 award.
Joining the Landowners Association
Becoming a member of the Landowners Association is open to property owners within the Klipkop Conservancy
who are adjacent to the existing Sanctuary (reserve). Understandably, it is only possible to expand the Sanctuary contiguously.
The Wildlife Sanctuary is managed by the Klipkop Landowners Association. Almost 1,500 Ha of the 2,271 Ha under management is allocated to the Sanctuary.
The balance of the land is beyond the boundaries of the Lynwood, Boschkop, Cullinan and R25 roads (as illustrated below).
