To protect Klipkop, enabling it to continue its vital work in preserving endangered bankenveld vegetation and dependent species.
Objective #1: To expand the Sanctuary to occupy the maximum possible area.
The Klipkop Wildlife Sanctuary has been formed through a novel leasing arrangement with a number of land owners.
The objective is to expand the Sanctuary from its current size of 2,200 ha to occupy the maximum possible area within its 5,000 ha physical boundaries. More >>
Objective #2: To raise the environmental conservation profile of Klipkop within the community on the basis of its location on an endangered highveld grassland, Bankenveld.
Klipkop is located within a rare veld (vegetation) type called bankenveld.
The loss of bankenveld, and its affinities with the grasslands of the interior plateau and the savannas of the Bushveld,
would mean the loss of inherent biodiversity – the basis of all life. More >>
Objective #3: To raise the wildlife conservation profile of Klipkop within the community by featuring 'overlooked' species.
In the same way that grasslands have historically been overlooked by conservation, so has the antelope and the many smaller mammal species.
The roan and sable antelope are considered highly threatened, but even the future of more 'common' buck species, such as eland and kudu, are "conservation dependent" according to the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. More >>
Objective #4: To raise the profile of Klipkop within the local and international community to encourage interest and participation in South African conservation.
